Heritage track: Chinese 103

Requirements

The Chinese major adopts a holistic approach to the study of China. It introduces students to language, literature, culture and society in traditional, modern, and contemporary China.

The Chinese major is composed of twelve courses.

1. Chinese 101 – 201 for non-heritage track. This requirement is waived for students who place above 201.Chinese 103 for heritage track. This requirement is waived for students who place above 103.

2. Five language courses with no less than 19 credits above 201 up to 400 level.

  • Non-heritage track: 202 – 402

  • Heritage track: 203 – 404.

Students who are placed beyond 202 in non-heritage track will take higher-level courses in Chinese language, literature, or cultural studies to complete the equivalent number of courses and credit hours for the major.  

Students in heritage track will take additional language courses at 300 and 400 level and/or courses in literature or cultural studies to complete the equivalent number of courses and credit hours for the major.

3.  Four content courses with no less than 14 credits. Two of the courses must be from Category I, and one of the four courses must be at 300 level.

No more than one lecture course from a non-Emory administered study-abroad programs or CHN 496 (Language Internship) may be counted as an elective towards the major. Only one course from outside REALC with at least 50% of content on China can count as an elective. Exceptions to this rule may be granted at the discretion of the major advisor.
